Hello Community, if there’s one thing we’ve discovered this year, through the projects we’ve completed and our teamwork, it’s that while technical skills are essential, it’s soft skills that truly ensure a project’s success. Having a solid technical foundation is crucial, but what makes the difference is our ability to connect, lead, and collaborate.
Now, the key question is: Where do we work on these skills? It’s not like learning programming, where there are structured courses and tutorials. Can empathy really be trained? Is it possible to develop assertive communication? Can we learn to lead or manage conflicts like learning a new programming language?
The answer is yes, but it requires a different approach. Soft skills aren’t acquired through theory alone; they are practiced, refined through experience, and, above all, require intention.
And this isn’t just a personal issue. As one advances in their career, these skills cease to be optional. The higher the position, the greater the demand for leadership, empathy, and the ability to manage diverse teams. Technical skills will get you so far, but soft skills are what allow you to climb and stay there.
Let’s see a little more:
Soft Skills: More Relevant Than Ever
📊 A fact we can’t ignore: according to Udemy’s 2025 report, 92% of recruiters believe that soft skills are as important, or even more so, than technical skills when making a hiring decision, and now more than ever as a differentiator from what’s coming in AI and automation.
💡 At Tekne, we see it every day: you can be a technical genius, but if you lack empathy, clear communication, or the ability to collaborate, your impact is diluted.
Key Soft Skills for 2025
Based on our experience and analysis, these are the skills we need to develop to meet the challenges ahead:
- 🤝 Empathy and Emotional Intelligence: Understanding and connecting with people is key, both inside and outside the team.
- 💬 Effective Communication: Knowing how to explain complex issues in a simple and clear way.
- 🧠 Critical Thinking: Solving problems by combining logic and creativity.
- 🔄 Adaptability: In an ever-changing environment, flexibility is essential.
- 🚀 Leadership and Collaboration: Building strong teams and working toward a common goal.
- 🎨 Creativity and Innovation: Seeking new ways of thinking and doing.
These skills aren’t just “nice to haves.” They’re the cornerstone of any project or team’s ability to excel and generate real impact.
And how to develop your soft skills?
💪 Developing these skills doesn’t happen on its own; they need to be worked on, like any other technical skill. Here we share some concrete ideas for technical and data professionals:
For Data and AI professionals:
- 👂 Active Listening: Truly paying attention, not only to what is being said, but to the context behind the words.
- 🗣️ Assertive Communication: Conveying ideas clearly and respectfully, without beating around the bush.
- ❤️ Emotional Intelligence: Recognizing emotions, both your own and others’, and managing them constructively.
- 🤝 Conflict Resolution: Addressing differences in a practical and positive way.
- 📚 Continuous Learning Mindset: There is always something new to learn, both technically and non-technically.
To implement in companies:
- 🌱 Mentoring: Create spaces for more experienced professionals to guide others.
- 🏋️ Soft skills workshops: Practical spaces to develop these skills.
- 🔄 Constant feedback: Encourage honest and constructive conversations.
- 🤝 Interdisciplinary projects: Encourage collaboration between different profiles.
- 🔍 Learning culture: Make personal and professional growth a daily part of your work.
The Particular Challenge of Technicians: I don’t like talking, much less human beings!!!
⚙️ We know that more technical profiles, such as those in data or AI, face some unique challenges:
- 📝 Translate complex concepts into simple, clear messages for non-technical audiences.
- 🤔 Cultivate empathy in an environment that can sometimes be very analytical, isolated, and nerdy.
- ⚖️ Balance technical precision with the need to communicate effectively.
- 👥 Lead multidisciplinary teams with very different dynamics and perspectives.
If we can work on these areas, we’ll not only improve individually, but we’ll also make a difference as a team.
Final Tips
🚀 These aren’t innate skills; they can be trained.
🤝 Technology complements, humans lead (at least for now).
📈 Invest in your overall development (not just with a technical focus, but also in public speaking, theater, creativity, leadership, etc.).
And remember that great changes are coming from automation, but what is still difficult for AI and Robots is what makes us human: empathy, the ability to manage, and having judgment. So the future will belong to those who know how to combine technical excellence with interpersonal intelligence.🌟
